1. Choosing a Subject and Photo

Let’s begin with the choice of subject. I decided on flowers. They can be found in almost every garden and offer exceptional opportunities for a perfect setup. Over a few days I took about 100 photos under various light conditions. The images were imported from the digital camera directly into StudioLine.

Now the choice of image takes priority. First, I sorted out blurred and out-of- focus images and deleted them from the image archive. To properly set the subject in its scene, a professional will try to avoid small, distracting elements near the subject. Consequently, my favorite was image No. 3, the red Camellia.

3. RGB Mixer

To convert the image to black and white, pick the “Monochrome” option.

The image now appears in gray-scales.

However, it does look a bit flat because the tool only converted the color values. To optimize the photo and give it the pizzazz of a professional shoot, I usually resort to the following trick…

5. Result

With a single effect filter, we converted a color photo into a black and white image and adjusted the tone values to give it the appearance of a professional shoot.

As always with StudioLine, the full-color original will remain intact. You can experiment with settings without hesitation!

4. Optimization

The sliders allow me to give add emphasis or downplay the red, green or blue tones of the original color image.

2. Image Tool

I’ll click on the photo in the image archive to select it. Then I’ll open the “RGB Mixer” effect in the Image Tools.

Set your creativity free and emphasize particular aspects of a photo by subsequently converting it to black and white. The conversion can be controlled quite precisely because a color photo contains extraneous information when compared to black and white.
